Mahabalipuram, India – A Photo Blog

A few weeks back, we went to a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site, Mahabalipuram on our way back from Pondicherry. We were not able to spend more than 5 hours here but still it was a beautiful experience.
Mahabalipuram is famous for its rock cut carvings, temples, Rathas (Chariots), cave sanctuaries etc. This group of monuments have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. With the time we had, we were able to only visit few of the important monuments like the Shoreline Temple, The five rathas, Descent of the Ganges. We also spent a considerable time at the beach there but please note that it is heavily crowded at dusk and I did not enjoy the crowd.

Things to note:

Parking charges: For each of the sites, there is a different parking site and you have to pay for each one. I am not sure why this is the case. We spent around Rs100 on parking charges alone.
Ticket Charges: You can use one ticket to enter all the sites here. Ticket charges: Rs 10 for Indians and Rs250 for foreigners.
Shopping: There are lots of vendors selling random stuff here. But everything is overpriced (because of being a World heritage site) and it is better that you do not buy anything.
Getting there: It is around 60 Kms from Chennai and around 100 Kms from Pondicherry. We drove there. But you can catch a bus from either Chennai or Pondicherry and this will not take more than 1.5 hour from Chennai and 3 hours from Pondicherry.

Anyway, thought of taking you through a photo tour of Mahabalipuram:

P.S: For those of you wondering why I have suddenly gone quiet for a while, I have some news for you. Some of you already know.
  • Firstly, I was on vacation in Dubai last week and it is kind of difficult to update your blog when you are having too much fun.
  • Secondly, for the next year I will be busy pursuing an Executive General Management program at IIM- Bangalore. Yes that means that the frequency of my blog posts is going to come down. I won’t be getting much time now between life, work, studies and assignments. I will still be traveling. More updates on subsequent blog posts.
